When I was at the university, many joked that it wasn’t “the real world”. We were in a fish-bowl so to speak, the eye of the storm and could not decipher, could not discern what it was we were doing. The local Roman Catholic priest admonished me it was the real world, but wasn’t he, pastor of the University Newman Center, also in the academic world and not the “real” world? Now I know in retrospect of age, he was correct.

“It takes some people longer,” a Jesuit quipped to me during confession.

In some fundamental ways, the universities and endowments are at the center of “deep state” public policy.  Non-committal research and development.
