05-07-2018 Letter to Jon Seipp; #DrPollock’s #SchooltalkChapter6; Julie Lythcott-Haims, #HowToRaiseAnAdult; #UCSDBookClub A #PBCGuru Production

In re: Schooltalk Chapter 6 by Dr. Pollock.

Invite dialogue with students about their ongoing life experiences.
So, as equity designers, let’s enable Life Talk: let’s design ways supporters can communicate with young people as needed about things young people are experiencing and supports they need. [–From Jon Seipp’s letter on Dr. Pollock’s work to members of UCSD Alumni Book Club.]

We went to the Sonoma Valley Authors Festival last weekend. One of the speakers was Julie Lythcott-Haims. Interesting to know the young adults want to hear about us and about appreciating us listening to their concerns. I thought the youth of today didn’t want to lay their problems on their elders.

It happens. I’m willing to listen. Julie’s lesson on being Frosh Dean at Stanford [Dean of Freshmen] brought in humanity, goals, destiny and “over-parenting”. Maybe it includes, like property, the exclusion of other adult mentors.

I enjoyed reading your letter this week.

I am sorry it took so long to come to this juncture regarding what Schooltalk recommends, listening to the trials and tribulations/enlightening experiences/loves as students.

Of course, subtext: free speech; directed communication; freedom of association.

Sincerely,

John Rubens

Subject: Schooltalk – Chapter 6 – Think/Discuss: Designing an Ideal Student Support Calendar

Hi John,
Thank you to everyone who has been keeping up with our discussions of Schooltalk. By now you should have read the next chapter of Schooltalk. Please be finished chapter 7 by April 19th.

Please go ahead and read the following message, from Dr. Pollock:

Here’s a PRINCIPLE of schooltalking for equity: We need to make it more routine, not rare, to invite dialogue with students about their ongoing life experiences.
So, as equity designers, let’s enable Life Talk: let’s design ways supporters can communicate with young people as needed about things young people are experiencing and supports they need.
THINK/DISCUSS: If you were going to design an Ideal Student Support Calendar to structure a student’s typical month, what communication opportunities would you schedule on that calendar? Who from our Foundational Image (page 10) would you gather, how often, to talk about which domains of students’ experiences? Via which channel would you support them to communicate?

Share your thoughts, and your own THINK/DISCUSS, in our Online Forum (http://ucsdeducation.pbc.guru/)!
Best Regards,
Jon
