Maybe Meredith Whitney’s forecast of our economy for the next two years provided the grist in my mind overnight to foment elements of a novel or screenplay:

Setting:  Outbreak or Epidemic with limited ability of the Administration to provide treatment (perhaps medicine or antidote) to all infected or to be infected.

[Subtext:  Medical coverage ; medical insurance].

Historical parallels:  The Titanic (limited lifeboats available); Nazi Concentration Camps (Quarantine and “liquidate” lower “classes”).

Basis of Plot:  Administration must make a Sofie’s Choice , decides to segregate those with medical coverage from those without medical coverage or other means to pay for treatment, medicine or antidote.   

Dark Side:  Save covered patients; quarantine (and let die) uncovered.  Historical references: Titanic & lifeboats, Nazi Concentration Camps & Genocide.

I’m watching The Crisis  (1950) starring Cary Grant as the doctor and Jose Ferrer as the Oil Man.  I wonder if this movie influenced me too.  Definitely regarding who gets medical treatment and who doesn’t.  “Save me doctor!” pleads the revolutionary to the doctor, played by Cary Grant, pondering whether to acquiesce in extreme close-up…fade out–THE END.

Re:  Obeying Authority as in Romans 13 inter alia

The overwhelming majority of citizens respected Gloria Steinem in the sixties and seventies; her days of folksy liberation and litigation. We watched and listened as she re-defined the inequalities of that time.  In recent years, Steinem saw the pendulum swing the other way and quipped, “Well, at least men (learned to type).” Now we not only respect Gloria, we admire and honor her. She worked within the framework of authority and “spoke truth to power” as much as any Enron whistle-blower, and she was their pioneer.  At once a demonized Joan of Ark, she has taught us men to get ready, be prepared for the future (which is now past) and we are better for it. Women have proven (albeit with affirmative action) that they were better equipped to deal with an oncoming age of media and computers than “mere mortal men” (think Superman). “To think, to sit.” (think Hamlet by W. Shakespeare). Is Gloria the “Ophelia” of our society? Who was/is her “Hamlet”?

Lest We Forget: BUCKLER UP (See Psalms 18:1 et seq.) What My Father Taught Me: I’ve got to do “it” (a tough task) or “It” (the civil authorities) will find me.
